This project is a part of the 10kdesigners capstone project assigned by Airtribe, with the aim of solving the video viewing experience on Airtribe to make consuming lengthy educational content easier for their learners.

Overview

Airtribe is a social learning platform built to transform the way you learn and network. With tech leaders as instructors and mentors, their programs are designed to help you enhance your skill set or transition into the fields of product management or engineering.

The core of the project lies in recognizing this challenge and undertaking a transformative initiative to enhance the video viewing experience for the diverse community of learners.

Now of course, before we start solutioning, it’s highly important to know the problem in hand.

Problem Statement 🔴

“We’ve observed that majority of our learners frequently go through the recordings of live sessions on our Airtribe dashboard, whether it’s to catch up on missed sessions or revisit previously covered topics.

However, we’ve also noticed that many learners face difficulties in staying engaged throughout these hour-long videos, which leads to demotivation and, in some cases, result in drop-offs 😥”

Enhance the video viewing experience on Airtribe to make consuming lengthy educational content easier for our learners.

Expanding the problem

Airtribe has successfully established itself as a reliable educational platform, but user feedback indicate a growing demand for improvements in video content consumption. So the primary objectives of the capstone project was to solve the video viewing experience on Airtribe to make consuming lengthy educational content easier for their learners which included:

  1. Reduce Dropout Rates: Minimize the number of users disengaging from lengthy educational videos.
  2. Increase Engagement: Enhance user interaction with the content through improved features and design.
  3. Optimize User Satisfaction: Prioritize the creation of a positive and efficient learning environment.

I did a survey with Airtribe learners in cohort-based courses to gain insights, and here’s what I found.

Data derived from the surveys
  1. Video Duration: 41% of learners indicate a preference for videos lasting less than 15 minutes, suggesting an opportunity to break video content into parts to make it easier for them to watch and learn and to enhance overall engagement.
  2. Engagement challenge: Surveys shows learners faces difficulties in maintaining engagement, suggesting a need for features that enhance the overall appeal and interactivity of educational content.
  3. Desire for Interactivity: Learners express a clear preference for interactive tools, indicating a features that actively involve them in the learning process.
  4. Shared Viewing Experience: Learners shows interest in a feature that shows who else is watching the same recorded video simultaneously, indicating a desire for a shared learning experience and potential collaborative discussions.

User pain points:

My solutions & improvements

Having thoroughly analyzed the data and interacted with the learners, I’ve identified several areas for adding new features. In the following section, we’ll go over each of these improvements, which are all intended to improve user experience.

Let’s explore these design in detail one by one -

1. Integration of Online and Live Chat Features 🟢

Introducing online and live chat features that enable users to see who else is watching the same video in real-time and engage in live discussions which can significantly enhance the collaborative and social aspects of the learning experience. Here are several benefits and considerations for implementing these features:

  • Shared Experience: Knowing that others are watching the same video concurrently creates a sense of community and shared experience among learners. This can lead to increased engagement between learners.
  • Immediate Feedback: Learners can provide instant feedback on the video content, such as highlighting interesting points or expressing confusion. This real-time feedback can be valuable for content creators and educators, allowing them to understand how learners are engaging with the material.
  • Real-Time Interaction: The live chat feature allows learners to engage in real-time discussions about the video content. This fosters a sense of community and collaboration, enabling users to ask questions, share insights, and exchange perspectives with others who are watching the same video concurrently.

2. Breaking video into chapters 📹

Introducing “Chapters” Breaking long recorded hours of video content into smaller parts can have several benefits for learners, enhancing their understanding and increasing engagement. This clear organization allows users to locate specific topics or revisit key concepts without having to watch the entire video, enhancing overall accessibility.

Breaking the content into parts enables learners to progress at their own pace. They can choose to watch one chapter at a time, take breaks between chapters, or revisit specific sections as needed. This flexibility accommodates diverse learning styles and preferences, promoting a more personalized and adaptive learning experience.

3. Quiz Feature 🧩

Introducing a quiz feature to the Airtribe platform enhances learners engagement by transforming passive learning into an active, gamified experience. Quizzes provide formative assessments immediately after video segments, reinforcing understanding and identifying areas for review. Gamification elements, such as scoring and badges, add a competitive edge, motivating learners to excel. Adaptive quizzing tailors questions to individual skill levels, offering a personalized learning path.

Here’s feedback I received from the Airtribe team for one of the feature I designed in this capstone the “Live chat” feature to keep the learners more engaged through out the video session.

My Learnings 💡

This marked my first industry project, and here are the key takeaways:

  1. Sticking to design guidelines is essential when working on an existing website or app. I believe that the design should be seamless in order for users to navigate easily.
  2. Long-form content is essential for increasing user productivity. It aids retention and keeps users engaged.
  3. Through working on a real-world project, I learned that designing for various user states, honing features, and putting oneself in the users’ shoes is just as important as appearances.

And that’s a wrap 🎉

I hope you enjoyed my work as much as I did. Huge thanks to Bonnie for her constant support and to the Airtribe team for this great opportunity to tackle a real problem.

If you have feedback, please share it; I’d love to discuss it with you. I’m open to Product Designer opportunities and can be found on LinkedIn and Twitter.
