The idiocy of White people.
My husband William and I live in his childhood home in a community that was once primarily Black people. The older folks are dying out, and gentrification is threatening the neighborhood. Even so, most of the people who live on our street are Black. Last summer I was on the front porch and heard the ice cream truck coming. The tune they were playing was "Camptown Races."
It never ceases to shock me how Whiteness pops up in unexpected places--and yet, I suppose by this time, I have no reason to be astonished.
Thank you for laying this history out there and making it plain.
