Spy Schools by Daniel Golden

Book Review of Spy Schools: How the CIA, FBI, and Foreign Intelligence Secretly Exploit America’s Universities by Daniel Golden

It’s on page 205. The author tells how the CIA persuaded kitchen staff to poison attendees at a scientific conference in Western Europe in order to get an Iranian nuclear scientist to defect. The book does not indicate in exactly which country this took place but based on the scheduling of scientific conferences on nuclear power I think it was Germany.

To me this is shocking. I don’t think kitchen staff should ever poison or contaminate food. In the book it said the victims became violently ill and while it implied they survived it did not come out and say that directly. Did they survive?

When I heard the author give a talk at Arlington Community Education in Arlington, Massachusetts many people laughed when he read this part of the book. But it’s not funny. It’s an abuse of power and unfortunately if the CIA has done it in one place they will do it in another. How many times has this happened? Was there ever confusion over the intended victim? Was the poison chemical, viral or bacterial?
