I’ve been having some really interesting conversations on Reddit about this. RedditUser u/LookIMadeAHatTrick found some catalogs or entries for Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man (This was a James Joyce reference) linked from the Gardner website. I know they are faked, because I created them, and my exhusband, Archie James (Jim) Caralis, a software engineer and computer hacker, put them up.
For now, I’m just looking at them again and going to show you how you can see they are faked. I will update this as I go. In the faked 1935 catalogue titled General catalogue, compiled by Gilbert Wendel Longstreet, on page 178 the first two lines containing the title of the artwork and the description, show that they were printed by a computer because they are full justified with stretched spacing between the words so that the text stretches from margin to margin. The rest of the entries have standard spacing. The font is a little off too. I think it’s the same font but a computer version not type. It looks less crisp.
