What is it?

UserTesting.com is a research tool for unmoderated usability testing, design iteration, and design validation. It can source test participants for you as well as let you use your own sourcing list.

There are many competitors now in the space, such as TryMyUI, Userbob, UserPeek, UserZoom, and Userlytics.

When should it be used? (or what to tell your PM)

Reason #1

You want to make sure a design is usable by testing it with a prototype.

Reason #2

You want to validate design assumptions and/or answer specific product questions, such as:

  • Do users know what this icon means?
  • Do users care about this piece of information?
  • What do users expect to happen when they click on this?
  • Do users know where to find X?

Reason #3

You want to determine a winner between two or more designs — A vs. B., new vs. old, etc. This is especially useful for cases where an A/B test cannot run live on production due to impacts on earnings, revenue…
