The big thing with NYPD is that it’s impossible to fire a cop in their department. That union is so powerful and has everyone in New York government scared of them. New York doesn’t have LEOBOR laws but they might as well have because the union has everyone in power scared shitless. No one wants to take them on simply because of the size of NYPD. It needs to be BROKEN DOWN. It’s far too large.

The NYPD has FIFTY THOUSAND employees! In comparison, LAPD and Chicago PD have only has twelve thousand. Los Angeles County is actually BIGGER than NYC. It’s a fair comparison, since NYC is made up of Burroughs. Yet, LAPD only patrols LA proper and the Valley. We have LA County Sheriffs picking up the unincorporated areas and the other cities who have incorporated patrol with their own departments.

I think that the bigger picture issue is that the NYPD is just too large for any competent department to manage. It invites this kind of corruption and controversy due to its sheer size. Breaking it down to more manageable departments by borough would be the more sensible solution.
