Here’s the thing: there normally wouldn’t be anything wrong with officials meeting with the Russian ambassador, as long as they’re upfront about the fact of the meeting and the topics of discussion. Why lie about it, unless there’s something nefarious being covered up? Given all the known business connections and the Russian interest in getting sanctions lifted, it isn’t hard to imagine what the discussion topics might be, and given this administration’s track record so far, the reality is probably worse than anything we’re imagining.
