This is Why You’ve Already Broken Your New Year’s Resolution

What the heck happened to this being your year?!

We’ve just passed the middle of the month. How stinkin’ hard can it be to keep a promise for 2 ½ weeks?

Very hard, thankyouverymuch.

But it doesn’t have to be as difficult as we make it. Here’s what happens to make us fall short so quickly.

Front and Center

You’ve got to keep your goals in front of you. I’m sure by now you know that you need to write your goals out in specific, measurable, attainable… yada yada. You know, the ol’ SMART acronym.

But if you’re like most people, you write your dreams on a piece of paper and make them into goals by setting deadlines, writing exactly what you’re going to do to achieve them. You just know you’re gonna do it this time!

And then five days into your new journey, excitement begins to wane. Wait, what is happening here? Less than a week ago, this girl (or guy) was on firrrrre!

When you lose focus, you lose fire.

Keep the written goals close by and review them frequently. For even more effectiveness, read them out loud to yourself.

You’ve got to do hard things

In nearly all things that are worth achieving, some sort of sacrifice will need to be made. Who wants to sacrifice? It kinda hurts. But if you are serious about success, you’re more than likely going to have to endure some pain, whether it’s physical or emotional… or both.

You can do this though! We all know that after a little bit of struggling, success is right around the corner.

No more excuses

I know it’s hard, but at some point, you’ve got to stop cutting yourself so much slack.

For instance, if your goal is to up your writing game, it’s time to stop reading about writing and get to the writing part! Produce content so you can improve your skill and attain even more clients.

If your goal is to tone up those muscles, time to stop hitting the snooze button in the morning. I know you’re tired. We all are. But those muscles aren’t going to grow themselves. Get movin’.

If your goal is to save money, it’s time to stop going through the drive-thru. I know you were running short on time this morning, but you could’ve made your lunch the night before or programmed the coffeemaker to have your coffee ready for you before you leave the house.

You were going to get organized? Schedule time today to go through that pile of mail, clean off your dresser, make your bed, own that to-do list (like this article teaches).

You get the idea. Do the hard things now. It will get easier later.

So you messed up. Now what?

Well, it’s not the end of the world. And it’s not the end of the year. So don’t wait till next January 1st of next year! In fact, it’s not even the end of the month, so don’t wait till the 1st next month!

Start now. Not tomorrow. Not Monday. Do something today that will move you closer to your goal.

Recommit to doing what you said you would do at the outset. Practice being true to your word, even if no one else knows about it. In fact, you may be better off if you don’t tell others what you’re about to do.

Here’s to a fresh start! Don’t get down on yourself. Take some time to re-evaluate and adjust your goals. The worst thing you can do is give up. It’s all a learning process, so learn and go excel at achieving your goals!
