…”Only kindness matters” was a lyric in one of my songs but it’s really become a profound insight 25 years later into the way I want to live my life. When I first wrote these kinds of lyrics many people thought I was too sweet or naïve, and I’m glad that nowadays people are starting to see the importance of love and kindness.

Be Consistent — Consistency is the key to life. There’s consistently been a lot of things in my life that have taken my focus off of music and as a result it’s hurt my growth. You have to constantly create, not just for fans but to be the best that you can be. Being elite means doing it every day.

I workout every day, either weights or some type of stretching workout. That keeps my body healthy and strong. Walking in my neighborhood, just enjoying the trees and birds, dogs and cats and random people who walk by always gives me great pleasure and a sense of peace.

I wish someone told me that there are many ways to reach a destination. I’ve learnt that there are several roads to success and there is no one strategy that works. Everything is possible! A producer once told me that the only way I can succeed in music is to focus on just one approach and make it my own, but I think that limited my creativity for a while until I broke free.

Don’t force it. When I first started writing, I would sit down and “try” to write. I have come to learn that when you try to make something good, more times than not it does not come out good! It is when I am most inspired and let it happen naturally that the best material and ideas come about!

I’d say this. At some point, that precious idea you gave birth to grows and starts living a life of its own. Your story and all its constituent parts ultimately belong to the world, and you have to let it go. That’s why you must be true to your story, finding truth in all its components and respecting them. You make all your decisions based on this. Your commitment to the truth has to be 100%, because, as the poet said, there is nothing more permanent, nor beautiful, than truth. That is all ye need to know on Earth.

Be Patient. This is not a race, and sometimes we forget that. I was once very impatient with my progress at guitar and really let it affect my attitude. I learned a great lesson about patience and perseverance by playing alongside some great musicians who paid their dues in the industry.

No matter how hard you think you’re working, there is someone working harder than you. I think that this is a really important one. I fell under the trap of putting in the minimum effort into things because I believed that my talent would take care of the rest. This is a wrong mentality to have, and I do genuinely believe there will always be someone working harder than you. So why not give it your all? look back and say “I gave it my 100% and there is nothing I can do about it now.”

An Interview with Karina Michel Feld

Don’t sell yourself short: There were many moments early on with the band where I was hesitant to speak up in certain situations. For example, discussing getting paid at shows was something I often overlooked at the time because I felt we weren’t at a certain “level” that demanded that discussion be had yet. It’s important to have faith in yourself and what you’re contributing to the world. If you don’t believe in yourself, no one else will!

Be here, now. Stop listening to the chatter inside your brain. You know what I mean — the voice playing out in minute detail what “might” happen or what “could” go wrong, or that wants to remind you of all those times in your past when things didn’t go as smoothly as you had hoped. None of that is real. It either already happened or may never, ever happen. The only thing that exists is this moment, right now. Get out of your head and experience it. It’s really nice out here.
