I actually wrote on self-harm in a very similar way here (fictionalizing a real-life story), and as a filmmaker I decided to tell the story through a personal short-film / PSA.

My hope is to help people identify when friends need help early — I believe it’s not that we don’t want to help, but we miss the signs.
