But these fake accounts hurt legitimate users the most, especially those trying to grow a solid following. Bots or fake accounts also cause legitimate users to believe their efforts are reaching more people and having a bigger impact than they truly are

I’m not entirely persuaded that this is correct. It’s relatively simple to audit the people your post is reaching, and it’s also relatively simple to evaluate the distribution of a message. I’d link tutorials, but I’d feel bad picking any out of what’s already a pretty diverse basket.
I think the bigger problem here, is that people come to the network with unrealistic expectations of what it is, how it works, where the platform is going and what opportunity can be found given the current circumstances.
