As a lover of puns (the awful ones are best) I enjoyed digesting this piece. Johnson always struck me as a bit of a snob. He wasn’t too fond of the Scots either. His definition of oats:

“a grain, which in England is generally given to horses, but in Scotland supports the people.”

All of which helps explain why this is my favourite Blackadder episode:
