The precious gift of life

If you ever find yourself hopeless or depressed, just try to come to a place like the M building of Từ Dũ Maternity Hospital (or any maternity hospital near your place).

This place is for new-born babies and their mothers to rest a few days before leaving for others to come.

I visit my sister at the 8th floor. It’s not crowded here in the morning; a little bit more quiet and peaceful than normal hospitals. The corridors are bright, clean with a lot of lighting. The room is comfortable and has air-con. Nurses are nice and caring (not to mention some are good-looking as well). Everything is decent enough to impress first-time visitors like me.

Yet the best is not to come.

While waiting outside of my sister’s room, I see some fathers taking babies around. Babies are small, fathers’ hands big. And no matter how experienced a father you are, you’d always feel too clumsy to taking care of such a precious in your hands.

Among the fathers, there’s a foreigner. He’s tall, bulky with a nice mustache around his mouth (guess he might come from the Middle East). He’s the most worried-looking father, as he fixes his eyes on the baby, moving slowly and carefully like carrying a big bowl full of boiling fish-sauce.

I notice him from the moment he comes out of his room. He looks up and smiles gently when he passes me. I nod at him and smile back, when I truly feel his heart-warming love (for the baby, of course).

If people could have a chance to see those very first moments of their lives, things are much much better. Negative things would be of little matter, when we know we’re alive, we’re precious since the time we cried for announcing our presence in this world.

It’s easy to take parenting for granted, and not knowing how hard it is to raise a baby. Some live carelessly, hurt themselves mentally or physically, and disrespect their magical gifts of life. They were born to be an original, but choose to die as copies.

Under the table — by Louie Nohay

To live is to choose.

Choose better, live better.

What do we choose to become?

And will you be proud of that?
