A Subjective and Objective Way To Move Forward

Subjectively speaking, it’s been a beautiful Friday: I enjoyed my work, read a book, walked in the sun — nothing to complain about on a personal level. Objective speaking, however, it’s a sad day for the American democracy. When has the president ever forbidden well-established media outlets from attending his press briefings? Well today; and when else? in the 1930s (in Germany, during Hitler’s regime and with Goebbels’s direct involvement as propaganda minister). We all know what the grand finale and long-term consequences of that episode were in the European history of the 20th century, when a narcissist thought he was a leader (…).

When mainstream media outlets are forbidden from participating in the so-called democratic process of news delivery, alternative news can easily be created and fueled. It’s probably no news to you, the readers, but still, something to be aware of when reading news stories.

So what can we do to resist the alternative reality that today was legitimized?

  • subjectively speaking, and based on my personal experience of having grown-up in a communist regime, please learn to read between the lines — it does not guarantee that you’ll know the truth, but you will never, ever take things at face value. And hey, you can always come up with not one, but a plethora of possible interpretations of the story you’ve just read. Your imagination will grow exponentially in no time!
  • objectively speaking, we have no choice but to make sure that outlets such as Medium, Facebook, etc, let us, the people, publish the information we want others to know about. Since the press (well, at least the credible one) has been banned from doing their job, the perpetrators must have been scared of the power of words and chose to promote their own way of saying things.

Because words are so powerful, let’s use them wisely: so they don’t harm but empower; don’t denigrate but inspire, and don’t perpetuate lies but convey the truth (at least from our perspective as inquisitive, free-thinking, and intelligent human beings).
