Upgrade Your Life — Live in the mountains?

Recently, I visited my friends who are living in the mountains, completely away from the civilization, in India. They are 4 guys in their twenties from Estonia, Germany and India. They have a very simple life. They wake up in the morning, bathe at the waterfall, do some daily chores, some trekking, make some art, watch videos on Youtube(they have internet access), read, chill and sleep. They often have couch surfers to add to their entertainment. This place is 15 minutes away from a small village from where they buy their food and utility items.

About making money when you are living away from the civilization- there are always ways to make money, especially in the present digital world. If the cost of living is low, there is less to worry.

“That man is richest whose pleasures are cheapest.” — Henry David Thoreau

We can arrange our lives in different ways like living in a city, living in a small town or living as a traveler etc. The idea of living in a city with a job in digital marketing failed me. When I started traveling and became exposed to different life style options then I couldn’t get a reason to keep living in Delhi where life is shiny but hard and not so healthy. I quite enjoyed spending 2.5 years of my traveling and making money on the way. Now, I am living in a city in Vietnam, working in a job I really enjoy, experiencing a different culture. I still feel like a traveler, more stable though.

I believe we should always stay open to improving our lives- this was the reason I moved out of Delhi. After seeing the life style of my friends I am quite tempted to spend a large amount of my time in the mountains. The one week holiday gave me a new perspective to upgrade my life. In the mountains there wasn’t much to worry about. The air was very fresh, I was surrounded by nature, my best friends were there, the food was very healthy and tasty, I had plenty of time, the cost of living was very low. I was mentally and physically very alive and active. There were a lot of uncontrollable factors but it was a great challenge to the mind.

The mountains, trees, stars, animals- all seemed like a mirror to my inner self. Clarity was easy to find- such is the magic of nature.

“You are not in the mountains. The mountains are in you.” -John Muir

What defines a good life? To me — good mental and physical health, abundance, loving relationships & art. All of these things helps to be in a flow state, where we pay more attention to little wonders of life and less to worry and doubts. Living in the mountains with friends provides all of this.

What is a good life according to our society? A lot of us idealize spending our lives working for money only to realise in the end that we forgot to live on the way. Are we missing the simplicity of life?

“It’s good to have money and the things that money can buy, but it’s good, too, to check up once in a while and make sure that you haven’t lost the things that money can’t buy.” — George Lorimer

Traveling and this holiday made me wonder about the life in a city where we earn more and spend more- we are always in a rush, uncomfortable with people and things around us, the quality of the food and air isn’t as great. Though I love cities too, and they have a lot of great things to offer-may be a great night life, more entertainment options, chance to meet different kids of people, access to some facilities which might not be available elsewhere. But these facilities like a fancy furniture shop, beauty parlor etc are probably are only needed in a city. So, are we just complicating and then re-solving our lives living in a city? Especially in the age of internet/information where every one can access most of the necessities in life even when living on a mountain away from the civilization.

After this experience I have decided to spend at least a few months in a year with my friends in the mountains. Rest of the year, I plan to travel and live in other parts of the world. This sounds like a great balance for me.

We can dream and achieve all our dreams if we believe in them, how would you guys like to upgrade your life?
