Magic Mantra of Success — ‘Make the Most of Your Time’

The funny thing about time is that we always think we have it in plenty. But, the fact of the matter is that if we don’t know how to manage our time efficiently we will always keep chasing it. The sooner we embrace this fact, the better it is for our professional career.

And, I realized the importance of time quite early in my career, since I was handed over the responsibility to manage a team from the word go. So, not only did I have to make sure that my personal eight hours at work were being spent productively, I had to also make sure that the team was also making the most of their time.

It was tough getting used to it in the beginning, but in the end I had set myself certain rules of time management that have helped me immensely in my career. I’ve been using those rules to manage my team’s and my personal time effectively. And, I’d love to share them with everyone here in this post.

So, let us have a look at those points here -

Never say you don’t have enough time — you always do!

“Don’t say you don’t have enough time. You have exactly the same number of hours per day that were given to Helen Keller, Pasteur, Michaelangelo, Mother Teresa, Leonardo da Vinci, Thomas Jefferson, and Albert Einstein.” ― H. Jackson Brown Jr.

Positive thinking — I’m a firm believer that positive thinking can change our life. Our brain is too sensitive. We need to acclimatize it to get the best out of it abilities. If we continue to fill our mind with thoughts like ‘I don’t have time for this.’ ‘I wish there were more hours in the day’ and similar other ones, then the mind automatically starts to enter a state of negativity.

Instead of thinking negatively, try to think of ways you can do more even if you have less time.

Stop wasting time on useless stuff — start prioritizing!

Talking to team members and interacting with others in the team is imperative. And, there’s no fixed limit as to how much time should you be spending on these two. But are you using the interaction as a means of building rapport or is it turning out to be a pit for office gossip and time wastage?

Researches show that it is the latter. For instance, talking on phone and office gossip ranked the top two time-wasting factors at workplace. And, the time wasted ranges majorly from 30 minutes a day to 2 hours.

By parting ways with these two factors, you will eventually have more productive time at work. So, the problem of running short of time is automatically going to get fixed!

As far as talking to others and interacting with them is concerned, why not make use of your breaks for that?

Don’t let perfectionism hold you hostage — strike things off your task-list ASAP!

Perfectionism is a relative term — you can never achieve it! What might look perfect to you, might be too naive or basic for someone else. The whole point is to focus on the key deliverables and make sure that those deliverables are met in one go!

Get down to striking off the nitty gritty aspects of the project in the most appropriate manner so that you have plenty of time to iterate in the end, if needed. Don’t let the project get asphyxiated in the beginning. Let it breathe in the air of accomplishment by finishing tasks at quick speed.

Plus, by accomplishing tasks with some time in hand you are actually giving yourself some buffer time as well. This buffer time can serve as a break to think over, or iterate the strategies if needed so that you are able to work efficiently the next time you have something similar to work upon.

Automate, move fast and have fun!

Need for speed — this is the one factor that drives businesses in today’s time. And, technology is the one thing that can help to fulfil this need for speed.

Technology can help you automate processes. The things which were taking quite a lot of time in the past can be done in fraction of seconds thanks to technology.
