Effective collaboration forms the heart of working together. We live in a highly disruptive world. Teams are spread across the globe, working round the clock and doing unimaginable things. And, the credit for all this goes to technology.

I mean, there was a time when going to space was a huge achievement. And, today we have been practically living in space for more than one and a half decade — International Space Station that came into being in the year 2000. All that has been possible due to the rise in technology. And, effective collaboration has been one of the biggest reasons behind it.

Thanks to effective collaboration, we have been able to weave the magic together. We have been able to identify the signal from noise. We have managed to connect the dots to become more productive. And, the evolution is going to continue in the coming year as well.

It will no longer be about just collaboration

The past few years have been all about the rise of collaboration tools. And, how they have helped to change the ecosystem of working together. While the rise of apps like Yammer and Slack opened new horizons of collaboration, work processes were still more or less disconnected.

Explosion in technology has done a massive job in bringing teams together, but work processes are still isolated from each other. We’ve been working in silos, using multiple applications to do different activities. One tool for bug tracking, other for taking notes, and yet another for communicating with teams and clients.

Broken work processes will become connected

Thanks to cloud technology and rise of open APIs, we’ve started to see apps that can connected the work processes, which were earlier disconnected. The focus has now shifted towards connecting work processes to unleash higher productivity.

The future lies in tools that will bring together all the elements of working together under one roof. You won’t have to rely on one tool for task management, and another one for invoicing. Everything will come together within one place. And, this will open a whole new arena for productivity and collaboration apps.

We’re going to see the evolution of collaboration ecosystem

We work in closed ecosystems, where the apps are also disconnected. Like I said, we are using one tool for one process, and rely on another one for something else. But, the future lies in stitching these closed apps together.

Collaboration technology is going to evolve into an ecosystem where everyone can emerge, converge and work together in a seamless manner. No longer will the apps be disconnected. It’s like everything will come under a single roof to create a self-sufficient ecosystem which can thrive within itself.

The year 2016 saw the rise of intelligent integration systems, with the option to integrate different apps within the tool using their public APIs. But, the future is going to be focused more around native features. We are going to see the rise of apps like ProofHub with native collaboration features, which make the app self-sufficient in itself. You won’t need to integrate with other applications to get a compelling service experience.

Wouldn’t it be great to have a single system for everything at work, rather than having to switch from one tool to another?
