KIC Score — June release

For the first release, the KIC Score covers the urban centers of Douala, Accra, Abidjan, Nairobi and Lagos/Abuja. In June, the Global KIC Score stands at +11 while the City KIC Score hoovers from -13 to + 19. Douala (Cameroon) residents are most bullish about their prospects whereas those in Accra (Ghana) and Abidjan (Ivory Coast) expect a deterioration in the economy. There is significant uncertainty across the board on ability to meet regular expenses over the next six months, with the dominant response being ‘maybe’. Respondents are most pessimistic about job prospects, even in Lagos where sentiment about the overall economy is positive.
The overall optimism in Douala can be attributed to the economic activities generated by the preparation of the African Nations Cup in 2016 & 2019.

“Despite the current economic challenges in Nigeria, residents of Lagos and Abuja are still optimistic about the economic prospects in Nigeria over the next 6 months. It is not surprising that residents of Accra are, on balance, negative about Ghana’s economic prospects given slowing economic growth, high inflation and interest rates, and high levels of government debt (which crossed the dangerous 70% threshold in 2015).” said Trudi Makhaya, Economist & CEO Makhaya Advisory.

Main findings from the June release:

  1. City and National perceptions diverge
  2. Household & Personal finance, confident consumers
  3. Consumers don’t feel it’s a good time for large purchases
  4. Dim job prospects within the urban centers
  5. Men tend to be more optimistic or pessimistic than women
