BLOG POST 1
For my blog this week I will be discussing the Music Video “Girls like you” by Maroon 5 and Cardi B. This Video was released on May 30th, 2018. It is the ninth track on the band’s sixth studio album. The video begins with the lead singer of Maroon 5, Adam Levine, standing alone in a grey room. Once the music begins the camera angle starts to change and continues to move in a circular way around him for the rest of the song. Every time the camera view hits his back there is a new girl standing behind him. The girls change every time the camera moves in a complete circle. Every girl that appears in the video is very different from one another. There are women of all races, height, size, etc. The video features Sarah Silverman, Gal Gadot, Aly Raisman, Millie Bobby Brown, and Ellen DeGeneres. The women featured in the video are all popular and powerful women who are working to make a difference in the world. There is a clear message of women’s empowerment. The all male band wears colors such as blue, grey, and black in the video whereas, the women are all wearing bright colored outfits bringing the attention to them. Cardi B was another way for the band to bring in some feminist attention because, she is such an advocate for the feminist movement and breaking out of a “man’s world”. However, the release of this video opens up a question though which is, “Why now?” As the feminist movement is growing did the band just hop on board with it to gain positive press reviews. The interviews that have been recorded since the release have been heavily focused on the more cinematography aspects to it all rather than the overall meaning. Maybe the band believes that the empowering message is so clear that it does not need to be discussed. There are many ways to look at this video but overall I believe that the video was very well done. The entire process from the camera angles, lighting, music, and message were all well thought out and precise.
