Choon Advisor Interview: Savan Kotecha

Songwriter Savan Kotecha has been the recipient of 16 ASCAP Awards and 9 BMI awards. His songs have collected 12 Grammy Nominations and have achieved number-one status all over the world, having sold more than 300 million copies. Savan was seen on the UK version of X Factor where he helped develop One Direction and wrote their break out single “What Makes You Beautiful”. Other Savan songs have released by artists such as Ariana Grande, The Weeknd, Justin Beiber, Maroon 5, Katy Perry, Ellie Goulding, Demi Lovato, Usher, Britney Spears, Madonna, Enrique Iglesias, and many more.

What benefits does Choon offer that you believe will attract artists?

I’m a strong believer that the foundation of the music business was to rip off talent. Royalty payments have been made extremely complicated and most creatives don’t understand it (most executives don’t seem to either). I think Choon and blockchain makes it simple. A song is streamed, and everyone involved gets paid, there’s no middle man and no chance for ‘leaky pipes’. Full transparency.

What are your thoughts on the proprietary Smart Record Contract?

I think it’s brilliant and puts the power into the hands of the creators, no middle man.

How important do you think it is for artists to get paid daily?

Extremely. Royalties are a tough way of getting paid if you think about it, waiting every quarter and not having any idea of how much or what will come in makes it tough for life planning. I think this will make a real life difference to artists.

How important do you think it is for artists to get paid with full transparency?

I think it’s about time.

What are your thoughts on the Choon co-founding team and it’s team of advisors?

I think they are innovators who have the potential to completely change the lives of up coming talent.
