After Johnny Depp managed to convince a jury that it’s defamatory for his ex-partner Amber Heard to say she’s a public figure representing domestic abuse — despite another court finding him to be a domestic abuser — his fans did something that backfired massively. They crowdfunded over $10,000 to purchase unsealed trial documents and published them online for everyone to read.

Depp’s team had won a number of pretrial rulings that allowed for evidence to be kept out of the trial, but the unsealed court documents brought them to light.

Depp’s team had allegedly tried to enter nude photos of Amber Heard as evidence and tried to use her brief stint as an exotic dancer against her, as though it somehow makes her claims of abuse less credible. Depp’s team were also aware that Heard’s best friend had died in a car accident when she was 15 — they tried to insinuate that the reason Heard’s licence was once suspended when she was a teenager was that she had killed her friend. Obviously, this isn’t true. To illustrate just how desperate they were, Depp’s team even tried to include into evidence that she once got a speeding ticket when she was 17 years old.
