Love Over Hate: Donate Bigly
When the world is ending, sometimes a good laugh is all that can save you. Lately, I’ve been in need of laughs, and today’s podcast guest provides a way to have a chuckle while making an impact.
Donate Bigly is the brainchild of two lawyers in New York who were tired of feeling frustrated and helpless every time they read a story about another politician trying to destroy something important to them. This guy wants to end climate change research. That dude wants to defund Planned Parenthood. Way too many people want to destroy public schools. Like most of us, they felt like there was just too much.
So they decide to tackle a little at a time and started Donate Bigly to do it. At Donate Bigly, when you make a donation, it makes an impact in more ways than one. You choose a politician and an issue, use their contact info when you make a donation “in honor” of them, and they get the acknowledgement. We all saw how well this worked when tens of thousands of people made donations to Planned Parenthood in Mike Pence’s name. It’s a strategy that both donates to a worth cause and also lets the politician trying to harm that cause know that YOU, for one, will not stand by and let them do it.
My favorite thing about Donate Bigly is the way they attack this with a sense of humor. From the name, which is tremendous, it’s great, it’s the greatest, most tremendous name ever, believe me, to the hilarious pictures and captions (Ryan is a classic but don’t sleep on Spicer and Carson), the site has a levity that is sorely needed in these dark times. They were inspired by Bill Murray and, really, shouldn’t everything be?
