I’m thrilled that you’re sharing your post on Medium and excited about the conversations it will spark. I hope that your piece will encourage people to understand and think critically about these issues and respond in kind.

Based on past experience, we’ve developed a list of best practices to spark interaction and engagement — simply put, to be good at Medium. I’ll be monitoring engagement and sending the most notable activity to you, but to ensure the best possible experience for you, I strongly encourage adopting these guidelines:

  1. Share the posts on Facebook and Twitter. Your friends and professional contacts can’t respond to your piece if they don’t know about it! Spread the news about it on social media to reach beyond your immediate network. If anyone responds to you with interest, feel free to connect them directly with Medium at carrie@medium.com.
  2. Engage with other writers. Interact with the writers who write you a response, to which you’ll be alerted by an email notification. That means:
  • Reading every response you get.
  • Recommending the good ones by clicking the heart button at the bottom of the post.
  • Highlighting pieces of text within the post that you particularly like by scrolling over the desired text and clicking on the pen icon.
  • Writing your own response in return. Scroll down to the bottom of the post to which you want to respond and where it says “Write a response,” just start typing. You can go into full-screen mode if you prefer. Your response will both be linked to the original post and live as its own post, with its own URL.

3. Tweet your favorite responses. If you love a particular response, Tweet it out with a text shot with credit to the writer. Simply highlight the text you’d like to tweet and click the Twitter bird button.

That’s it! Very excited to welcome you as a writer on Medium.
