Drive Medium adoption with entertainers and culture makers who want to authentically engage with the world

Medium has emerged as the new op-ed page, where people who have ideas — of consequence or creativity — publish, interact meaningfully with an engaged, thoughtful audience, and drive conversation forward around issues of import in the world and that matter to them. It’s where Bono proposes a Marshall Plan for Africa, and Melinda Gates responds. Where Orange Is the New Black’s Uzo Aduba pays tribute to a teacher who changed her life, and where director Alejandro Inarritu makes an impassioned plea for immigration reform.

It’s where Miley Cyrus announces her foundation for at-risk LBGTQ youth, and Vine star Jeffrey Marsh participates in a conversation with trans community members about how he chooses to dress. Where Matthew McConaughey shares, in his inimitable voice, lessons he’s learned. Where best-selling author John Green discusses the absurd nature of press tours and Emma Donoghue the experience of watching her novel Room become a film. And where Nirvana’s Krist Novoselic supports Larry Lessig’s presidential ambitions.

And it’s not just individuals: The producers of the film The End of the Tour created a publication to celebrate its subject, David Foster Wallace.

We are building a new kind of media product — where people can share their thoughts, perspectives, and creative ideas without an editorial filter, speaking directly to an impassioned, engaged, and influential audience. The role of Influencer Outreach, Entertainment will drive the next phase of platform adoption with writers, actors, directors, show runners, comedians, musicians, playwrights, producers, and other culture makers who want to authentically publish to, and drive conversation forward in, the world.

What will this role do?

As Medium’s representative in Hollywood, this role will leverage journalistic skills and a deep network to recruit talent and other creative people working in entertainment to participate in a thriving cultural conversation. This person will use their editorial chops to help culture makers shape and share their ideas. The role will identify the people and moments who are most likely to have an outsize impact on, as well as those most likely to become super users of, the platform.

This role will craft appropriate messaging to and support for these users, working hand-in-hand with their teams to onboard and train them in Medium, come up with the right ideas, provide them with opportunities to authentically interact, and trouble-shoot. This person will provide white-glove service to make sure these users have a uniquely engaging experience on the platform — and think of Medium first when they have something they want to say.

This role specifically entails:

  • Developing an outreach strategy and tactics to help Medium meet its objectives.
  • Defining the message and story and creating materials that convey the value proposition of joining the Medium network.
  • Identifying, cultivating, and pitching appropriate individuals, companies, and organizations to recruit.
  • Surfacing opportunities for content creation, collaboration, and feedback on creative work.
  • Brainstorming story ideas and editing stories.
  • Onboarding, training, and advocating for this group of users and providing white-glove customer service.
  • Channeling feedback from these users that will guide new feature development, and working with Medium’s product teams to implement them.
  • Documenting and evangelizing best practices for entertainers and talent.

Who will do well in this role?

The ideal candidate is based in Los Angeles, deeply immersed in the culture, and recognized as an expert in talent relationships. He or she has a deep background as a journalist, an agent, a publicist, or a similar type of role, and experience deploying a proven editorial sensibility to help craft compelling narrative writing. S/he has boundless creativity and a nose for news, is a natural evangelizer, and intuitively knows the right person to contact about writing at the right time. S/he has a deep network of relevant relationships and contacts and exceptional presentation and project management skills. S/he has strong writing and editing skills, excels at ideation, and doesn’t miss a detail. S/he’s self-directed, flexible, and comfortable working independently in a satellite office. And this person should love Medium for its unique opportunities for expression and interaction.
