Wearing makeup gives us confidence. Is that really a good thing?

The other day, the Youtube algorithm that essentially runs the world now suggested I watch “Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s Guide to Her Signature Red Lip”. Shared on Vogue’s channel, it’s an eighteen-minute video of AOC, sitting in a bathroom, completing a morning grooming routine that takes her from vaguely tired-looking (after a night up late, you know, doing her job) to fully made up and “ready to seize the day”, red Stila lipstick and all.

My immediate reaction to the video suggestion was to feel bummed out — the same way I felt bummed out by the parts of the Hillary…
