Today we were called in for a double appointment in which Eva was having her hearing aids fitted following a discussion about the next few steps with members of the paediatric, ENT and audiology team.
We are keen to determine the reason for Eva’s hearing loss; which was confirmed today to be due to cochlear damage- that tiny shell-like organ of hearing. It is usually people with this specific problem that are good candidates for cochlear implants if hearing aids are not sufficient. The next round of tests will include a thorough eye examination, and hearing tests for myself and Pete. We could be waiting a number of months for genetic test results. At around 7 months old Eva can have more extensive tests to consider her viability for a cochlear implant.
On the subject of cochlear implants- We have seen so much positive coverage this week, most notably in a BBC2 programme called ‘See Hear’ which follows some children with severe and profound hearing loss who have received the implants. There was no limit to their abilities; they were no different to hearing children — playing sports, musical instruments and excelling academically. It was a big turning point for us both to see this, well done for finding it Auntie Tilly!
Unfortunately on arrival we found out that one of the hearing aid moulds had been damaged at the manufacturers so Eva only has one for now, but will be fitted for her second next week. (Check out the picture at the top!) We can already tell just how hard it is going to be to work out whether the hearing aids are helping, but we have our fingers well and truly crossed. It is just the very first step of many, but knowing my little buddy even MIGHT be able to hear my voice has already felt wonderful..
In other news, it is Eva’s 8 week immunisations tomorrow morning — so do think of the poor little mite! Infant Calpol at the ready (and I do plan to spoil her rotten afterwards, so that should help) ☺
