Ammonoidea Illuminated Exhibit to Open in New York, Unveiling Never-Seen Creatures
The debut solo exhibition of paleoartist Kate LoMedico Marriott, the reconstructionist behind Ammonoidea Illuminated, will open February 3rd at LaGuardia Community College in Long Island City.
The show will focus entirely on Ammonoidea Illuminated, a series of colored pencil drawings completed by LoMedico Marriott between 2016 and the present, using sedimentology as well as cephalopod biology to reconstruct the ancient, elusive heteromorphic ammonoids.
Ammonoidea Illuminated: the Exhibit will be the second show the cephalopods have had in the span of six months. This past fall, two of them were included in the finalist showcase of the International Award on Scientific Illustration at the Spanish National Museum of Natural Sciences in Madrid. As a result, they were also featured on Spanish National Television.
However, the show is especially exciting because it will herald the release of four new heteromorphs: Australiceras irregolare, Ancyloceras vandenheckii, Rossalites imlayi and a new take on the classic Nipponites mirabilis.
Though many of the drawings for which the series is known were completed several years ago, 2019 is already looking like a stellar year for LoMedico Marriott’s heteromorphs, with an upcoming book and a feature in Fossil News magazine.
