I Did Some Research on Chris McDaniel and It Turns Out He’s Just a Big Idiot
On Sunday night, another angry white dude took to social media to spew hate — this time towards this past weekend’s Women’s March, which is believed to be the largest protest in U.S. history.
His name is Chris McDaniel and he’s been a Mississippi state senator since 2008. In case you missed it, here’s what he had to say:
Unsurprisingly, the post has upset a lot of people. The smart thing to do would have been to issue an apology after quietly deleting the post. That doesn’t seem to be his style, though. He’s continued to egg people on, basking in the attention that the post has received. In a follow-up post written directly to his critics, he writes “I get it, you love free stuff,” which is classic dog whistle politics — pitting GOP voters against liberal women by suggesting that the only thing those women want to do is stash away taxpayer money for their recreational abortions.
This isn’t the first time that the politician has ruffled some feathers. The Southern Baptist attorney hosted a conservative radio show — The Right Side Radio Show — on Mississippi station WMX1 98.1, from 2003–2007. Transcripts for the show are available online and reveal just how xenophobic this Tea Party politician is. Here are a few gems:
“If they pass [slavery] reparations, and my taxes are going up, I ain’t paying taxes.”
“Are churches protected the same way, let’s just say a homosexual would be? I’m curious, if this was a homosexual church — do those even exist? If this was a homosexual church and there were 9 that burned down, what would the outcry be? It be incredible!”
“Really, with you Libertarians, I think the platform is, and I’ve said this before, a free hooker and bowl for everybody. I think that is it.”
“I think Osama, I mean Obama might be someone who follows God.”
“A dollar bill can buy a mansion in Mexico.”
“Mamacita works. … I’m an English-speaking Anglo. I have no idea what it means, actually, but I’ve said it a few times, just for, you know, fun. And I think it basically means, ‘Hey, hot mama.’ Or, you know, ‘You’re a fine looking young thing.’”
If that’s not enough to make your eyeballs pop out of your head and steam come out of your nose, you can read plenty more here.
His comments on his talk show came back to haunt him in his 2014 race against Thad Cochran for a U.S. Senate seat. McDaniel’s camp cited it as an attack by the liberal press and dismissed it because it was over a decade old. McDaniel lost the race.
McDaniel is on his second term in Mississippi’s 42nd District, where he will serve until at least 2020.
We’ll get this out of our system now — Chris McDaniel sucks. We know this, he’s proven it. He’ll keep proving it if we keep listening to him. But let’s just leave him alone. He is one of many sad, angry men mulling around in our broken system. He is not unique, so let’s not allow him to think he is. It seems like if McDaniel had things his way, he’d be shock jock on par with Glenn Beck or Don Imus. His rhetoric is tired though, so it found a better home in politics. Let’s fight him with action, not anger.
