Being an only child, I did “girl things” with my mom — baking, sewing, cooking — and “boy things” with my dad — math, programming, soldering. I didn’t realise there was anything weird about this until I was 16 and someone tried to tell me that girls aren’t supposed to be interested in auto repair.

Although it just occurred to me while writing this that even the “girl stuff” I grew up doing was all still centred around making things. I actually originally learned fractions by halving and doubling baking recipes, long before I learned them in school.
