Desmond Doss story continues to resonate with ‘Hacksaw Ridge’ Oscar nods
The story of Lynchburg native Desmond Doss that was brought to life in director Mel Gibson’s World War II drama, “Hacksaw Ridge,” was nominated for six Academy Awards on Tuesday. The nominations include: best picture, best director (Mel Gibson), best actor (Andrew Garfield as Desmond Doss), sound editing, film editing, and sound mixing. The 2017 Academy Awards will air on ABC at 8:30pm on February 26.
Stephen Curry to speak at Liberty University’s convocation in March
On January 25, 2017, Liberty University announced that Stephen Curry will be speaking at its March 1 convocation. Curry, a Golden State Warriors NBA MVP, will be speaking during the visit as the university partners with Kick’n It to provide shoes for needy communities in Africa. Convocation takes place on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday at 10:30am.
Vintage Lynchburg sale not happening this year
Vintage Lynchburg events will not take place in 2017, and there is no indication as to whether the sales will be back. Over the past four years there have been nine Vintage Lynchburg events, all of which take a lot of time to put together, according to Leah Wiebe, one of the event organizers. Wiebe has decided to take time to reassess her life and priorities instead of putting together the time consuming event.
