In Chloe Bryan’s Mashable article, “A Professional Photographer Explains What You’re Doing Wrong on Instagram,” she addresses the “don’ts” of Instagram, according to professional lifestyle photographer, Alexa Jade.
After speaking with Jade, Bryan highlights five reasons that prevents a good Instagram feed and asthetic. The five reasons are as follows:
- The Instagram feed does not have a consistent theme. The article suggests that maintaining a consistent color scheme and photo style is important in creating a good Instagram asthetic. Photos that match generally look better on your Instagram grid. Most of my favorite photographers and bloggers on Instagram follow this rule as well. I think @ariellevey does a great job at maintaining a good theme. She follows the same color palette, which incorporates shades of blue, orange, and pink. All her photos match very well.
- The photos posted are not filtered to their full potential. The article explains that you must take advantage of photo filtering apps outside of Instagram. While Instagram has a few good filters, there are many apps that provide a larger variety of filters and editing tools. The authors mentions VSCO and Filmborn as examples. Personally, I prefer to use Lightroom. I like using Lightroom because you can make your own filters on this app, which helps me use a consistent edit and color scheme for all my photos.
- The photos posted are backlit. The author emphasises the importance of using the right lighting when taking photos for Instagram. Backlit photos are not always bad; however, they are usually harder to edit, according to author. I agree with this statement. I find it very hard to edit photos with bad lighting.
- The focused of the photos needs to be adjusted. The article claims it is important to play around with the focus of your photos. Personally, I find it is important to find the right focus, especially when the lighting you’re shooting with is not great.
- The photos are oversaturated. The article suggests that many people oversaturate their images in attempt to preserve bright colors. I strongly agree with this statement. When the saturation of a photo is too high, I think the image looks extremely overedited and unnatural. Personally, I come across lots of images like this when scrolling through Instagram.
I think this article provides a lto fo good information for businesses that want to develop a prominent presence on social media. Social media is very visual; therefore, good photography is necessary for good social media profiles.
