Bikes

If you like to pedal but don’t want to dodge traffic, consider an exercise bike. They come in two basic varieties: upright and recumbent. An upright exercise bike is more like a traditional road bike. A recumbent bike lets the rider sit back against a backrest with his legs out in front. ConsumerSearch.com says that whichever style you choose, you should look for certain standard features. Look for a bike that offers varying levels of resistance and a monitor that shows the resistance level, distance, speed, time and calories burned. It notes that a heart rate monitor is a nice option, too. You might also consider perks like a book rest and bottle holder to make the workout more pleasant.

Treadmill

The treadmill burns the most calories of any of the cardiovascular machines available at most gyms, says Alexander. You can expect to burn about 100 calories per mile, walking briskly.

Stamford notes that a treadmill can be adapted to many different fitness levels by increasing the speed from walking to running or by adjusting the incline.

Exercise Ball

Exercise balls are available in different sizes for various heights and weights. These balls generally come in five different sizes, ranging from about 17 inches (45 cm) to about 34 inches (85 cm) in diameter. When you sit on the ball, your feet should be flat on the ground and your knees should be level with or slightly lower than your pelvis. You should be able to sit up straight without leaning one way or the other to balance your weight. A taller person should use a larger ball than a shorter person.

Resistance Bands

Resistance bands are used in strength training exercise. They are essentially giant rubber bands that you pull against to strengthen certain muscle groups.

Like weight training, resistance or strength training is designed to build up muscle mass. Weight training is a subcategory of resistance training in which the resistance is provided by gravity. The resistance offered by the bands is in the elasticity of the bands themselves. Resistance bands are much more convenient than typical weight-lifting gear, being lighter, more portable and composed of strips of rubber with plastic hand-holds for ease of use.

A typical use for resistance bands is to place the end of the band under your feet while standing, hold the other end in one or both hands, and pull up against the band. This is the equivalent of a bicep curl with hand weights. A band with handles on either end can be held by the feet while seated on the ground with legs outstretched. Taking a handle in either hand, you pull with both back and shoulder muscles to work the same muscle groups that a rowing machine would exercise.
