Thanks Cam, for a follow-up to your previous article. I will confess that I haven’t read the initial post but only these follow-up comments. The only issue I have is on point 4. There is actually a significant amount of evidence that illustrates how agricultural lobbyists and interests have moved to undermine climate change. There is a UN report on just this issue. Unfortunately, methane, which is the more prevalent Greenhouse Gas in the livestock/meat-production industry, has over 5x the Global Warming potential as Carbon Dioxide. People sometimes argue that methane has less staying power in the atmosphere than carbon dioxide. That would be a logical argument if methane emissions were in decline. However, they are on the rise. That means that at present the meat/livestock industry is producing more ozone depleting chemicals than all forms of human transportation combined. Unfortunately, the meat industry is growing specifically in newly developed countries, such as India, China, and Singapore. As North Americans/some Europeans, we have been part of affluent economies for a few generations now, and due to unfortunate discrepancies in socio-economic development, we have consumed meat in larger quantities than the rest of the world. Essentially, we have ruined meat for the rest of the world because we have over-consumed and over-polluted. The reality is that the world would be a better place if we can warn other generations and cultures with newly increased access to meat products (while avoiding those who may sustainably harvest animal products) that this practice is unsustainable and harmful to our world. Yes, it is a form of hypocrisy because we have been consuming meat for generations without regard for waste, climate, or hubris, but as a result of that there is a real need to curb our appetite for meat and that is simply the reality we face in the world today.
