Without falling into the clickbait trap

Why are titles important? We all know the answer. They are the attention grabber. They are the hook that connects your story to your reader. In fact, they are everything. No one cares how astonishing your content is if your title sucks. Because no one ever reads it.

Blog posts, videos, books, emails, copies — they are the same. Every time the title appears in front of somebody’s eyes, it is an opportunity. It’s a matter of life and death, you only have one chance and one second to impress your audience, and stop them from scrolling. If you missed…

Coping with the new stage of life

Recently, my 83 years old grandmother moved in with us. She was living alone in her old flat ever since all her children got married. The flat has no elevator. It means she’ll need to climb flights of steps before commuting anywhere since she lived on the 5th floor.

Thank God she’s always been healthy. Taking stairways to the fifth floor was never a problem for her. Instead, I would be panting every time I reached her house to pay her a visit.

Grandma loves to tell me how she used to walk miles to work when there were no…

Nerds have the perfect skillset to make sales

Photo by ThisisEngineering RAEng on Unsplash

As a graduate with a First-Class Honours degree in Science, sales & marketing would be the last thing on my ideal job list — if it appeared at all. Why on earth would a scientist get involved in sales & marketing? They should be in a laboratory, researching, experimenting and publishing papers, lab coats and all, right?

This assumption is part of the problem. People used to think science graduates were just nerds. Others assumed they were mad scientists who have long curly white hair with an overgrown mustache. …

I still remember how I felt the first time I found Medium

“Seriously? Anyone can write about anything on this platform that has a Domain Authority of 96?”

It means whatever you write is very likely to appear on the first page of Google Search!

“What? You can even earn some USD here by just sharing your story?”

You don’t have to be a professional writer. It’s OK if you are a non-native English speaker. As long as you have a story to tell and some members read it, you get paid! That’s insane!

I was amazed, hopeful and readied…

Not Every Entrepreneur Wakes Up At 6 a.m.

The morning routine has always been a hype among productive gurus. It can skyrocket your productivity, they say. A typical productive morning routine shall start at 5 or 6 am and includes activities below:

  • Meditate
  • Exercise
  • Take a cold shower
  • Read
  • Journal
  • Plan your day
  • Set goals
  • Prepare breakfast
  • Have breakfast

After completing these tasks within the first 2–3 hours of your day, you can be certain that your day will be more productive.

To be honest, I don’t have any personal experience with this kind of productive morning routine, I’m not a morning person. …

According to research and individuals including Oprah Winfrey, Howard Schultz, and others

When I was a kid, I was told many life stories of how a person became successful even if they came from a poor background. Some of these stories are real, some are made-up. But they all serve the same purpose — to motivate us, to give us hope and to tell us, don’t give up.

You can be successful, you can become rich, after overcoming enough challenges and struggles.

Today, I still heard a lot of rags-to-riches stories. But they are all real. They are millionaires and billionaires who grew up poor. Some of the well-known stories are from:

Don’t belittle what a 40-year-old fruit stand can offer

Photo by Daniel Angele on Unsplash

Every first and fifteenth day of the lunar month is a slightly special day according to my family religion. On that day, we will worship our God with some fruits on top of our usual prayer. Therefore, my family will always visit the local fruit stand in our neighborhood one to two days before to buy some fruits.

I never know what’s the name of the fruit stand; it doesn’t have a sign either. What I know is, it has been there for the past 40 years. …

I mean, they sucked my blood and got pregnant…

Living near the equator and in Southeast Asia, my country only has 2 seasons:

  • Summer
  • Rainy Season

Most of the time, you either feel hot like fire or get wet like water…

These “seasons” made my country the perfect playground for mosquitoes since

Rainfall = Mosquito Breeding

Summer = Mosquito Biting — mosquito.buzz

From time to time, there will be news on people around me getting dengue fever due to mosquito bites by the Aedes Aegypti mosquitoes. It’s no surprise to be informed that someone I know passed away because of this deadly disease that has no vaccine or cure

It’s all about your habit, health and sleep quality.

According to CDC, 1 in every 3 adults in America don’t get enough sleep (7 hours per day). Teenagers, on the other hand, have an average of 6.5 hours of sleep time with 20% of them getting less than 5 hours of sleep, Scientific American reported.

Sleep deprivation is a serious problem for the country and the individuals themselves. Study has shown that lack of sleep has cost the United States over $411 billion annually. The impact on the individual, well, The New York Times has made it clear with its article headlined “Insomnia Can Kill You”.

It’s time to…

Stop listening to those who ask you not to

So, you are refreshing your Medium stats every 10 minutes to check whether the views, reads or claps have increased? You think it’s not a healthy behavior. You look like a maniac. But I’m here to tell you, it’s totally fine to do so. Well done!

I’ve read at least 5 articles on Medium asking me to stop checking my stats because it brings me no good. It’s bad for my mental health. And I can’t change a thing. Frequently refreshing them definitely not gonna help.

What’s truly not helping are those articles!

I’m still refreshing my stats 10…
