There are many kinds of genres of movies in the movie industry. When I look through the data from the study by Linder, Lidquist and Arnold (2015), I recognize a number of movies from the list. The two frequent categories that I found while sorting through the data were Family and Comedy movies. The time period of the movies from the study was from when the year I was born until I was nine years old.

Growing up, I watched a lot of “family” movies. Now, my favorite genre of movie to watch is comedy. I believe these two genres have a lot in common which is why I want to compare the two today using the data in the study. I will be comparing the two genres with their movie scores by critics to see which one was rated higher.

In Table 1, it shows the comparison of Family movies to the others in the study. The real question is, “Are Family movies worse than others?” Based off of the review of this table, the answer appears to be no. Why? In the box plot, the other movies scored between a 9 and 98. With Family movies, they scored between a 12 and 96. This could mean that because they have a smaller range in score that it could be worse than other movies but when I looked at the medium, I saw that it actually was higher at 52 compared to other movies at 51. That being said, I am predicting that family movies are much more enjoyable and well-liked compared to other movies by movie critics.

The same thing for table 2 with comedy movies, the range of the movies scores are less noticeable than family movies. The other movies scored between 9 and 98 while comedy movies scored just between 9 and 96. However, what stood out to me the most was the difference it the medium between the two bar plots. The medium for other movies is much higher at 53 while comedy movies score a medium of 48. I am predicting that this just means comedy movies are not as popular as other movies. One thing that I found very interesting in the data set for the study was the way movies were categorized. This means that some movies could more than one genre. I feel like this can effect the data in some ways as well.

In conclusion, I was shocked looking at the data that comedy movies has an overall lower movie score by critics because I feel like comedy movies are a go to for a number of people, especially for me. I really guess it depends on the person and what movies they enjoy.
