Youth of Hong Kong Seeks Independence

Protester covers his face and body from pepper spray attacks, Monday, Sept. 29, 2014

Last Wednesday, pro-democracy protesters flooded the streets of Hong Kong, demanding economic and political freedom from Beijing rule. Following the announcement of Beijing’s 2017 election, the protest began with a sit-in comprised of university students. The movement, Occupy Central with Love and Peace, joined students in their protest, turning the peaceful demonstration into one of chaos. As the crowd size escalated, spilling into traffic and blocking major roadways, law officials began to react with extreme force, dousing protesters with pepper spray and wielding guns as they attempted to take control of the Central district. Despite the extreme tactics by police, protesters in Hong Kong continue their fight for freedom and independence.
