third garment

For this week’s critique I decided to make a long maxi dress with the awesome blue snakeskin print I used for my first garment.

Although simple in design, I ran into major problems when I began to sew my fashion fabric. I was super psyched with the pattern pieces and muslin I had sewn up before beginning the actual garment (see below).

I cut the fashion fabric and did a self lining on the bodice, with a cream lining for the skirt. I gathered the skirt pieces to add more body to the garment. I sewed the dress up, and was putting the zipper in when I realized one of my back bodice pieces was cut incorrectly. So, back to the drawing board because I was so crunched on time that I had to recreate what I already had and make it work. Here is my altered design.

What I had to design differently was the back. I made it more of a box shape that cut low to the hip with a zipper starting at the top of the hip. I then added straps in the gold material from the previous dress and connected them with snaps to make sure the garment would not fall off of the shoulders. After many hours of fixing my mistake, the finished product turned out great. I am very pleased yet relieved that I can put this one behind me.

Halfway finished with the process and it feels righteous to start garment number 4. I am making a high-waisted skater skirt in the cream colored sequins I used on my first garment.

Definitely not getting cut happy with this one.. lesson learned.
