A trip to the Underground
Every town has their own cozy hangout spot and hidden deep within the Viking union of Western Washington University, you can find one of the coziest places in Bellingham, the Underground Coffeehouse. While walking in the settle sound of chatter and background music surrounds the room. Directly to the right is a counter for people to order whatever food or drink they desire. As a person enters farther into the place of business the floor changes from tile, to carpet. There are an array of different seating options ranging from a stool, chair, or couch. All of them inviting the customer to stay. The room contains no clear color scheme. From the middle of the room turning to see each wall a person is greeted with red, peach, beige, darker red and a small mural. None of the seating options reflect any type of scheme either, with the couches varying in both style, texture and color. The first set of couches are facing a small stage that can be seen from almost any place in the room. The stage looks old as if it has had years of performers enter and exit from it. Exactly like how one would imagine the typical college hangout to look. The overall atmosphere of the business is home like and welcoming
The Underground Coffeehouse can be used for many different purposes. It could be a place to have lunch with a friend. They sell a nice variety of both food and drinks. It is a perfect place to do homework either with a group or alone. The large amount of seating and tables makes it easy to fit a large study group; or if one wanted to work alone the underground is quiet but not to quiet. This makes it a lot less eerie than studying in the library. The underground is a calming work environment. There are also many free shows at night ranging from comedians, bands, or open mic. The shows make it a nice place to chill with friends after a long day.
Comparing to other places:
When compared to more popular coffee establishments like Starbucks or Tullys there are many distinct differences the Underground Coffeehouse has. At the Underground it’s a slower pace. Workers take their time to make sure that the customer’s order is just right, unlike Starbucks or Tullys which rushes people in and out as fast as possible. The different pace is part of its homey feel. It gives the customer more of a chance to sit down and take a break from the world. It should be noted that the Underground Coffeehouse wouldn’t be the place to go for a quick coffee run. It’s made to be a place where people stay for a while. With 40% of 18- 24 year olds drinking coffee each day (according to national coffee association) some should want to sit down and enjoy the break the Underground offers.
The Underground Coffeehouse is also an environmentally conscious place unlike some other coffee places. At the coffeehouse they use washable dishes for anyone staying, which reduces waste. It also contains multiple recycle bins for all environmentally conscious customer’s needs. For a place like Bellingham being environmentally friendly can be a make or break for a lot of people.
The fatal flaw
While the underground has many positives just like everything else it contains a fatal flaw. It is hard to find. To get to the underground coffee house one must either take a specific elevator in the VU down to the third floor. The inside stairs won’t take anyone to the underground coffee house. The only choice for people who are uncomfortable in elevators it to take outside steps which are found down a shadier looking truck loading doc. This way is kind of unpleasant but it definitely fits into the name underground. These are the only two ways I know to get to the underground and both of them took me a while to find.
Another flaw is some people find the Underground Coffeehouse’s mass of couches to make the place feel crowed. However I have gotten some contradictory answers about whether people like this or not. So this becomes less of a fatal flaw and more of a person to person preference.
The western Washington campus as a big place full of fun hangout spots. From Zoe bagels in the library, to stadium steps, to the Underground Coffeehouse which resembles of the coffeehouse from friends; each person will be able to find somewhere on campus that pulls them in. However it seems like the underground coffeehouse is a hidden treasure. While it may be hard to find, once there a person could find themselves feeling cozy, sitting on a comfy couch with a warm mug full of delicious tea or coffee.
