TIL: Car Insurance Is Ageist

My mother-in-law is in her mid-70s.

She’s been an elementary school teacher since her early 20s.

She still works, even though her health isn’t the best.

She still has a huge heart for children and makes an impact on kids every year.

She still drives well. She’s not blind, senile, or otherwise impaired.

But when she turned 71, her car insurance rate increased substantially.

So, let me get this straight — this woman, who has worked and raised a family and paid taxes her whole life, gets penalized for surviving past the age of 71?

Are you fucking kidding me?

Many senior citizens are on a fixed income. Most need to drive themselves around.

Why are we making it harder for them to be independent?

Couldn’t they take a driving competence test to avoid the larger premium?
