The Art Of Carbs — A SF Food Story
Give me food and I am happy. San Francisco does not disappoint. It ain’t cheap, but oh so yummy that it totally makes up for it. Why else would I pay north of $5 for a coffee and a pastry? $5 each that is. My expenses for food have skyrocketed since I moved here, but then again, so has everything else. So let’s get over it and indulge in some of the best food I’ve ever tasted.
Back home in Hamburg, I’ve always complained how Germans cannot make a proper sandwich. I was so sick of those dry breadrolls with cheap mayonnaise they sell at German bakeries. Made my skin break out and my mood cranky. Good thing I moved to Sandwich Wonderland. Because they do them right here. As with the most important things in life: it’s the inside that matters. Who needs bread anyways?

And while we are on the matter of glutenous goodness: Pastries! My absolute favorite is b.Patisserie, which also happens to be around the corner from my apartment. Trust me, after you’ve tasted the Chocolate Banana Almond Croissant, you don’t want anything else in your life. Except maybe their Kouign Amman. Also worth noting: Mr Holmes Bakehouse, instagramfamous for their Cruffin. Which I never had, but I’m perfectly happy with their Churro Croissant.

Yes, sugar is my weakness, so let’s talk Ice Cream. Or FroYo. Or Gelato. Or all of the above. I live in a very dangerous triangle of my favorite foods, all within walking distance. b.Patisserie is one, Salt & Straw is the next. My love for this place goes as far as being totally ok with waiting 30 minutes in line, for a double scoop of their frozen deliciousness. They have seasonal flavors, but you can never go wrong with these classics: Olive Oil & Lemon Custard or Peach Cobbler. Salt & Straw kinda ruined all other Ice Cream places for me, unless you consider the broader Ice Cream scene: Loving Cup’s FroYo is high up on my list, too. They mix the toppings completely into the Yoghurt, so you don’t have to dig it up, risking losing a bunch of your toppings in the process. Very smart, plus you get raspberries and Nutella with every bite. Win win, I would say. If all else fails, there’s still Coletta, a Gelato Place in SoMa, which literally serves frozen Nutella. Their Hazelnut Chocolate flavor tastes like the real deal.

And finally: Wine. After all, it’s Northern California, people. And if you’ve never ever seen me with a glass of wine, chances are that I don’t know you. California has much grape juice to offer, so grab a glass, sit back and relax! Pretty much within the week of arrival in the States, I attended my first wine tasting, with many more to follow.

This is definitely not the end of my food & drink adventures throughout the city, with my roomies Janet & Ian, I always have some trusted partners in crime. More to come! If you can’t wait, I happen to write Yelp reviews, too.
