Do you realize, I would have gone through life half-awake if you‘d had the decency to leave me alone?

James Ivory’s one of his best masterpiece which was re-released in the same year as Call Me By Your Name (2017), gaining a lot of attention and appreciation from film critics as well as the LGBTQ Community. From a classic gay drama film to the something that changes a lot of people’s point of view about such relationship.

With incredible list of the casts, it has also to be the reason why the film got so much of positive responses. Directed by the well-known James Ivory, were portrayed by James Wilby as the main character Maurice Hall, Hugh Grant as Clive Durham, also Rupert Graves as Alec Scudder. I’d love to guarantee you that it won’t be disappointing at all!

Now, here are things that matter as our own appearances about the film. Spoiler alert!

1. It was an adaptation of E.M. Forster’ book

If you are a book reader of classics, or had ever heard about E.M. Forster inventions, it’s time to put the book aside and watch the film. The book had served us literal magical literature and amazing storyline in a classically dramatic way, the typical things of Forster that many have already know.

Since it was an adaptation, there must have always had some differences to its original, and this terms occurred to the film, unfortunately. You may find few missing points while watching it as you already read the book, nonetheless the plot was not cracked a lot. Many majors are still served well.

2. Everything was a total romantically normal

Perhaps, the film is about man who was in love to his same-sex college mate, also the possible danger to both of them — about its relationship — as it took place in ‘10s where homosexuality was entirely banned. But their love and affection to each other narrated in a very normal way, which is amazing and perfectly fine to be watched by various ages. A little side note for kids which still have to be under parents guide. Love is forever love, anyway.

From left to right: James Wilby, Rupert Graves, Hugh Grant.

3. Maurice and his relationships

You read it right, he got more than one relationship which only one that works perfectly. The thing between him and Clive might ended up to the sink, but the love between Maurice and Alec run very lovely. Both relationships were adorable and gave Maurice the sight of how a love was; where Alec was the one who stayed with Maurice by the end of the story.

4. The dialogues, The letter, The “I love you”s

Maurice, I love you.

Maurice and Clive were intimately in love to each others that it will definitely saddens your soul when it reaches to the end. However, their love was truly wonderful and seemed so inseparable — which is a lie. Spoiler, beep.

I love you too.

Have you ever been in a relationship but still jealous to the fictional characters who were in love? This film will make you feel that way, pleased and joyous about it also, as if you were in love to someone while you are not.

Mind and write if you can’t come, for I get no sleep waiting. Yours respectfully, Alec Scudder.

Gold, literal gold! If you are looking for many inspiration of romantic poets, most of its dialogues or letters of this film can be the best choice for you to try. They are most of the time so cheesy, melted down the ice.

5. Leave you that complicated feeling

Maurice, I hope nothing is wrong.

People who had read and watch both of it, must have been through that mixed feelings of how it should’ve ended, how everything should never be that way, how Clive could’ve made it, and many other hows including some whys and what ifs. Nevertheless, it still presents you a happy ending where Maurice finally found his true love. But just so you know, you’ll have to see Clive in the way that you never thought he would be like that. Simply, he would be in the situation as what he used to say back then in the grass, with Maurice, under the sun.

The latest version has 4K resolutions and it is genuinely worth to watch regardless of seasons. Better late than never, so, what are you waiting for? It’s available on BFI Player and Prime Video also!
