Why Fans Love Mark Hamill and Why He Loves His Ugly Blue Sweater
Truthfully, Luke Skywalker wasn’t my favorite in Episode IV or V. I was 6 and 9 years old when those movies came out. Luke was a nice guy but wasn’t really doing it for me as a hero or role model or whatever. Han Solo was my favorite. Bold. Shoots first. Scruffy looking. Nerf herder. Scoundrel. Oh, yes.
But then Luke matured and became a hero in Episode VI. That last battle with Darth Vader when he threw down his light saber and stood up, unafraid, to the Emperor… That was my favorite part. I began to admire him, then. Ok. It was a crush, technically. But I was 12 so no surprise there.
I like the idea of having that much strength and courage to stand up for what is right. We need more of that. I have tried to live that. I hope my kids learn this, too.
As I’ve entered into the information super highway and I found out how much Mark Hamill has done in his career, I began to admire him, the real person that he is. As an adult looking back, I realized that his acting has always been that good as to portray a whiny, moisture farmer, or any character, so believably. He is obviously skilled and diverse in his talents. But that’s what a career in acting calls for, right? He’s certainly proved in more than one way that he’s more than a moisture farmer.
I started following Mark Hamill on Twitter not long ago and there really is much to admire about him even though he says he’s not heroic like Luke Skywalker. There’s a growing list of #ReasonsToAdmireMe that he’s having fun creating with fans.
Let’s begin with the infamous ugly blue sweater or even the floral couch that’s older than Chelsea, his daughter. (click links to see more pictures) Laugh at those things all you want, but how many celebrities are still happily married to their first wife (or husband) after more than 30 years? Mark is loyal. He’s #EquallyLoyalToFamilyAndUglyBlueSweaters.
Mark obviously takes care of his things. (I’m sure Marilou helps.) But I know this translates to him being so caring of his family, friends, and fans. No matter what we look like. No matter our age. No matter our style. No matter what our condition is. He’s not gonna throw you out. We will be his #hamsters forever.
I’m not saying we shouldn’t buy new stuff. When it really needs replacing, then sure, replace it. But Mark has put importance on other things than keeping up with fashion trends. Instead of buying a new sweater, where does his time and money go?
His net worth is at 6 million dollars according to richestcelebrities.org. Yep. He has enough to buy a new sweater or couch and he definitely won’t go hungry whether he’s a #DietingDork or not.
But Mark has been involved with so many charities and visited so many hospitals, I wonder if he, or anyone, can number them.
No, a couch is a couch. Kids in the hospital mean more to him than a new couch or new sweater. You can’t find fault in a guy like that.
And that’s also a trait we should all emulate more often.
Maybe that’s why he’s known to point at others often. He’s diverting attention to the ones who are also important. Ah, humble Hamill. You’re the best. I mean, you’re the greatest. No, how about: we love you, too. A lot.
Meanwhile, Mark has traveled to some awesome places and met so many awesome people and done some pretty crazy things in his career. I’m sure his scrapbooks and closets are overflowing with memorabilia.
But it’s still obvious that he’s not materialistic. He holds value in people and any keepsake is connected to memories made with people.
That’s another admirable trait we should make sure we copy on a regular basis.
Mark, you don’t have to wield a light saber to be a hero. A hero is there to swoop you out of danger. But you’re a role model, someone we should not just admire, but hopefully pick up a few good ideas and habits about life in general. Someone who lives what they believe to the benefit of others is a hero, though, in my opinion, because you are always standing up for what is right.
I know the desire to stay humble is strong with you, but your jolly, smiley, optimistic self is an inspiration that many of us cling to out of delight. Making us smile, laugh, or hang onto the edge of our seat for the best (worse?) cliffhanger ever, well, we love that feeling. You’ve saved us many times from a dreary look at our twitter feed or even our day. Someone needs to bottle that stuff you seem to effortlessly exuberate. In the meantime, keep giving us some daily goodies on social media. And may the blue sweater be with you.
