I too am guilty of using “best” to sign off my work emails and I cringe every time I do it! It’s what inspired me to write this — I feel like we’re all caught in an endless cycle of “bests” and “regards” and we can’t get out, because these choices are safe and inoffensive and there are so few alternatives. I like letter sign-offs much better — your example of “cordially” sounds warm and friendly, whereas “best” sounds condescending to me. Lately I’ve been trying to just sign my name in emails and seeing how that goes…
