It’s My Identity

Recently I have had some family members speaking out about how they feel as though it’s wrong for me to identify as Disabled. They see it as “giving in” or “giving up.” This really couldn’t be farther from the truth.

I grew up knowing I was different from the other children. I missed more school for being sick. I missed more school for doctors appointments. I frequently sat out of gym class. I was hyper-aware that other students didn’t spend their weekends vomiting due to the injections I received weekly. Back then, I would go and attend school like any other “normal” child, refusing to acknowledge…
