If you’ve spent any time near a college campus, you may have noticed that more and more of our society’s youth has ink in their skin. Tattoos have become increasingly popular, especially with the younger generation. Here’s why I think college students are making the tattoo shop their first stop in their new home.

You’re 18 and fresh out of the grips of your parents. What better way to celebrate than with some ink!

Most kids are close to, or already 18 by the time they go out to college on their own. For many, this is a whole new level of freedom to make choices on their own. A big first stop for kids who no longer need an “okay” from mom and dad is the tattoo shop.

It’s a great way to identify yourself when you’re surrounded by 10,000 other people similar to you.

Whether it be your star sign or a little doodle of something that you like, getting a tattoo of it is a great way to non-verbally show others part of your personality.

Getting a tattoo is an appreciation of art.

A tattoo doesn’t have to be significant, it can just simply be something that you think is neat and want to show off.

It’s also a cool way to memorialize something significant to you.

We’ve all been there…being away from your mom for the first time is hard. Nothing a little mom heart tattoo can’t fix! Or really a tattoo of anything you miss. Everyone loves a good portrait of your childhood dog.

Having ink is a great conversation starter!

Going to college is kind of a scary thing….especially if you are going by yourself. Meeting new people can be daunting. What are you supposed to say to get people to be your friend?? I can tell you from experience, my tattoos have sparked many a chat. It’s a solid ice breaker!

And my favorite reason…

You can have both! A career and tattoos!

Getting a tattoo is in no way waving goodbye to a stable career. You can have your cake and eat it too! More work places are doing away with tattoo discrimination. Or you can wear clothes that cover them up. For all we know, this man could have enough ink in his body to fill his coffee cup. Or there are heavy duty concealers that do wonders. There are lots of options!
