Selecting a good laptop for music production shouldn’t be much of a chore yet remains a critical decision to make. Your typical music producing laptop should have a powerful enough processing power and on top of that, it should last you many years to come, eventually effectively actualizing your investment. Desktop computers are arguably known to be more equipped with more favorable music producing and overall functions with the case being the placement of a miniature (or minimized) version of many components placed in the laptops for the sake of mobility. If you are a DJ, you’ll possibly travel a lot as well and want a laptop that isn’t bulky or heavy.
MAKING A CHOICE
There are certain basic guidelines required to be present in a music production computing system namely;
— A 15-inch screen
— Hard drive ( 5400 rpm is too slow, 7200rpm or SSD is much more preferred)
— DAW software to be used ( amongst the most popular ones are; FL Studio, Cubase, Studio One, Reaper)
— RAM (minimum of 8Gb but preferably 16Gb)
— Processing power (i3, i5, i7, i9 etc.)
— USB ports (Thunderbolt or USB C )
— Keyboard light
With these specification duly listed, I have compiled a list of laptops in an ascending order the top six laptops (containing at least 6/7 of these qualities) preferable for music production in 2019 so far.
6. HP OMEN 15

The HP Omen is one of the elite releases from HP this year. Originally marketed for its gaming capabilities, this wonder digital box is equipped with a powerful graphics card just to supplement its optimum operability.
ADV: The Omen has one of the most natural keyboards feels and 15’ inch quality display screen. From a quick glance of the Omen, you can tell the audio functions of this system have been well amplified through its state of the art speaker build. Has a scale-able RAM and Hard Drive .
DIS: Upon a physical look and feel the HP Omen is on the plus side of the size and weight scale. I personally don’t care for the more cooperate mouse structure. Does not possess the thunderbolt port

5. MICROSOFT SURFACE BOOK 2

The Microsoft surface book successor, the surface book 2 was a clear market giant upon its release earlier in 2019. Its superiority in the market and as well on this list is primarily due the presence of an in built larger memory (RAM), sleek body, and faster hard disk rate among many things.
ADV: Presence of a excellently friendly and smooth track pad. An SSD hard disk rate. Presence of a touch screen compatibility and a stylus. Presence of a detachable screen
DIS: Has a rather small inbuilt storage of 256 GB. Has some reported crashes. Quite costly
RATINGS: 4.2/5 STARS
CPU: I7 (7TH GEN)
STORAGE: 256 GB SSD
CPU CORES: 4
MONITOR: 15”
TOUCH MEMORY: 16GB
4. HP SPECTRE X360

The Spectre X360 allows you to use it like a normal laptop or as a tablet. Although a little small, it’s very well built with a great battery life of an 8 hour runtime. The Spectre x360, while being a touch-screen laptop is capable of processing intensive music work such as film scoring. However, there’s only single USB3.0 port that you could use for your audio interface or MIDI controller. Along with another two USB type-C port which is meant for charging and a Thunderbolt 3 port. Using the HP Spectre X360 for music production means investing in some USB-hubs. It’s great for remote working. The graphics card that comes with the Spectre X360 is not as powerful.
ADV: Great battery life. Amazing 4K display. Very upgradeable. Silent.
DIS: Very few ports. Thin build leads to quick overheating. Average graphics card. Requires upgrades for optimum performance.
RATINGS: 4.5/5 STARS
CPU: I7 (8TH GEN)
STORAGE: 1TB SSD
CPU CORES: 4
MONITOR: 15”
TOUCH MEMORY: 32GB (upgradeable)
