I will also say that while educators have never taught for the compensation, because of the burden of student loan debt and the spiraling costs of higher education itself, teachers are in an exceptionally difficult position to be able to make what we would consider a living wage. In New York, you are required to earn a masters degree in order to teach at any public school. However, the starting salary could not possibly offset the costs of earning that degree and living in a city like New York, with an exceptionally high cost of living. For many, teaching is no longer a professional choice but a charitable lifestyle.
