If you’re aging, or you have an aging parent or other loved one — and that applies to most of us, doesn’t it? — you may need to explore long-term care options.

In-home service offerings that are designed to help older adults stay in their communities and avoid unwanted or unnecessary institutional placements are becoming more widely available. That’s good, since most people prefer to stay at home or in an independent living situation if they possibly can. The options will depend on need, income level and ability to pay, and the state or town where they live.

Despite the interest in “aging in place,” all you have to do is look around you in most suburban and many urban areas to see the proliferation of senior living options.

Clearly, many older people either can’t or don’t choose to age at home. There are independent living senior apartments, Assisted Living facilities, specialized Memory Care units, skilled nursing homes, combinations of these, and larger Continuing Care Retirement Communities (CCRCs) that include all levels of care.
