There is nothing wrong with the idea of progress or perfectibility. The problem is with the unspoken assumption that usually accompanies it: that individual human beings can be perfected by outside agency, rather than by themselves, working it out on their own, over time.

Well said. This is a key problem and a growing one. We seek imposed external moral change even though is has no history of working because the long slow non-coercive process is just that: long and slow.
