Title: So easy to read, and can learn terms and styles within a matter of minutes

Review: This book is phenomenal and so well put together and thought out. You do not have to read it from front cover the back cover. You can just open the book up to any page and immediately pick up information. It couldn’t be any easier to understand and the visual examples and pictures are so helpful. I would recommend this book to any beer enthusiast. Even if you think you know a lot about beer, there’s so much more to learn. Would make an excellent holiday gift for any beer enthusiast.

Review: This second edition of The Beer Bible brings the information up to date, and maintains the quality research and writing of the first edition.

Six years is a long time in beer years. Craft breweries come and go, and new styles emerge. Even among the home brewing community (of which I count myself a member), the whole style guide has been revised to account for these new beers. So there was much ground to cover here.

What’s in the book? A brief history of beer, followed by a comprehensive description of regional styles, including some of the best examples of each. This makes for a world tour of beer, and, to drive the point home, the book ends with a chapter on beer tourism (where to go to taste classic styles when you’re on your trip around the world).

Michael Jackson (the author, not the singer) wrote classic guides to beer in the 1970s, which I still pull off my shelf to read. His work is more entertaining to read, but it is out of date by now. Oxford University has published The Oxford Companion to Beer, which is more scholarly and comprehensive, but less readable. So this book strikes a middle ground, bringing Jackson’s idea up to date without being as dry as an Oxford text.

Title: Informative but Doesn’t Cover All Countries

Review: There’s a story that goes with this review, so bear with me. I was getting ready to make an Irish stew, but the recipe calls for a bottle of Irish stout beer. I go to my local big box store that sells alcohol, lo and behold, they have not one single Irish beer in stock. I didn’t know enough about beer to think of a substitute. This “Beer Bible” would have been useful. I like that the author starts out with the history of beer and how it’s made. But if you could care less about all that, then look at the table of contents and see which type of beer or country of origin interests you. Not every beer in the world is listed. Each select beer listed has location of origin, Malt, Hops, ABV, and a short snippet of information. This is kind of a nice book to peruse before you go traveling.

I gave it only four stars rating, because the Asian countries were not adequately represented. There is a chapter on Sake and a smidgen on India pale ale. The book is mostly about American and European beer. I did get my answer on an alternative to Irish stout beer for my Irish stew recipe: it’s Dobblebock. I would still recommend this book for beer aficionados.

Title: A Remarkable Book that Every Beer Geek Will Love

Review: I’ll kick off this review with a remark that’s sure to insult a certain percentage of readers who are curious to know what I have to say about the Second Edition of Jeff Alworth’s “The Beer Bible.” Here goes:

If you’re the type of beer drinker, typically of the Millennial generation, who rhapsodizes about the seeming compulsion of today’s craft brewers to adulterate their brews beyond recognition by loading them up with fruits, Oreos, marshmallows, Graham crackers, pickle juice, peanut butter, sourdough pretzels and other disgusting contaminants, creating must-have, oh-so-trendy, selfie-worthy “beverages” that can in no way be called “beer,” then move along, folks — there’s nothing to see here.

But if you’re passionate about REAL beer, if you crave more knowledge about traditional beer styles, ingredients and brewing techniques, and especially if you wouldn’t drink one of the goofy modern concoctions if you were dying of thirst, then “The Beer Bible” is for you.

It’s impossible for me to praise this book too highly. A treasure trove of detailed, interesting and fascinating information that’s sure to make every true beer geek salivate, it really is the ultimate guide to beer. I’m as geeky a beer geek as can be — I even wrote a column in a regional monthly brewspaper for many years — and yet every page that I turned to in this thick, dense, heavy tome captured my attention immediately, and I quickly became enraptured with the depth and quality of the material contained thereon. I thought I was something of an expert on beer, but, between the main text and sidebars, I learned something new each time I cracked open the volume.

Two additional factors confirm my assessment that this is the best single-source beer guide on the market currently: 1) The adulterated “beverages” that I referred to above are conspicuous by their absence, and 2) Of four Imperial Stouts that Mr. Alworth lists as exemplars of the style, three of them — Founders KBS, Firestone Walker Parabola and North Coast Old Rasputin — are also my favorites, so he clearly knows whereof he speaks.

Every beer geek worthy of the name should own “The Beer Bible” and refer to it often.
